THE MODULES

Qualification gained:

On completion of the Adult teaching module, the trainee is awarded the Buteyko Breathing Association Adult teaching certificate and can use the abbreviation BBA (Adult cert). The Adult module is designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and experience to teach Buteyko breathing techniques to adults. 

Entry requirement:

Health professional qualification at degree level or equivalent

Time requirement:

Pre course: Prior reading and practical work required (7 hours).
BBT DVD, book and CD, plus worksheets will be sent to trainees to be completed before the
course to introduce concepts and gain practical experience.

Taught course: Two days (14 hours)

Post course: Submission of five detailed adult case studies for assessment (25 hours teaching).
Feedback will be given.

Continuing Professional Development(CPD):

Trainees will receive a certificate of attendance for 14 hours. On completion of the module the trainee will be given an additional certificate for 7 hours pre-course study.

The Adult module covers:

Assessment and contraindications
Practical techniques; control and extended pauses, relaxed, reduced and very reduced breathing, stop cough technique, nose clearing exercises and Buteyko adult set.
Brief historical background and published clinical trials.
Basic medication information
A brief summary of the scientific basis and theory

Buteyko Breathing Association Membership:

Holders of the BBA (Adult cert) are invited to join the Buteyko Breathing Association (BBA). Teachers with a private practice can advertise their contact details via the Buteyko Breathing Association website which is highly ranked on Google, this is free for the first year after qualification. Thereafter an annual BBA membership fee is payable, this is currently £35 per annum.

Qualification gained:

On completion of the Child teaching module, the trainee is awarded the Buteyko Breathing Association Child teaching certificate and can use the abbreviation BBA (Adult & Child cert). The Child module is designed to equip health professionals with the knowledge and experience to teach Buteyko breathing techniques to children with asthma.

Entry requirement:

BBA (Adult cert).

Time requirement:

Taught course: One day (7 hours)

Post course: Submission of five detailed child case studies for assessment (25 hours teaching).
Feedback will be given.

Continuing Professional Development(CPD):

Trainees will receive a certificate of attendance for seven hours for attending the one daytaught course.

The Child Module covers:

Assessment and contraindications relevant to children
Practical techniques; steps, squats, mouse and timed breathing, nose breathing games, breathing techniques during physical exercise and Buteyko child set
Tips to help reduce breathlessness in very young children
Basic medication information

Qualification gained:

On completion of the Advanced teaching module, the trainee is awarded the Buteyko Breathing Association Advanced teaching certificate and can use the abbreviation BBA (Adult, Child &Advanced). The Advanced module is designed to equip Buteyko teachers with additional knowledge and techniques.

Entry requirement:

BBA (Adult & Child cert).

Time requirement:

Pre course: Study of recent clinical trial and research papers. Completion of worksheet (7 hours)

Taught course: One day (7 hours)

Post course: Dissertation in the form of introductory lecture or journal article (7 hours). Feedback will be given.

Continuing Professional Development(CPD):

Trainees will receive a certificate of attendance for seven hours. On completion of the module the trainee will be given an additional certificate for 14 hours pre- and post course study. 

The Advanced Teaching Module covers:

New approaches to treat breathlessness
Additional diaphragm relaxation techniques
Additional nose-clearing techniques
Special considerations when treating hyperventilation, COPD and bronchiectasis
Discussion of research studies of topics related to BBT
Medication and the Russian steroid protocol for asthma
